Protected Areas

The Ultra Skyrunning Madeira takes place in areas of remarkable cultural and natural heritage within the Municipality of Santana, which gained worldwide recognition for its rich heritage in 2011 when it was designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.

Around 80% of the Ultra Skyrunning Madeira takes place within the Laurissilva Forest, which was designated as a Biogenetic Reserve by the Council of Europe in 1992 and included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list in 1999, being the only World Natural Heritage site in Portugal. This native natural forest has also been classified as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Natura 2000 network—an ecological network aimed at ensuring biodiversity by conserving natural habitats and wild fauna and flora across the European Union.

Part of the race also takes place in another protected area, the Central Mountain Massif, which is fully integrated into the Madeira Natural Park as a Geological and High-Altitude Vegetation Reserve. This area is also classified as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Natura 2000 network.

It is worth noting that the entire race takes place within the Madeira Natural Park.
